If you've ever seen thick ridges of ice building up along the edge of your roof in January, you've seen an ice dam forming — and if left unaddressed, it can lead to real damage to your roof, gutters, and even your ceilings. Ice dams are one of the most common winter roofing issues in Ontario, but the good news is they're largely preventable once you understand why they happen.

What Causes an Ice Dam?

Ice dams form through a simple but damaging cycle:

  1. Heat escapes from your living space into the attic (through poor insulation or ventilation)
  2. That heat warms the roof deck, melting snow sitting on the upper part of the roof
  3. The melted water runs down toward the colder eaves, which stay near outdoor temperature
  4. The water refreezes at the eaves, forming a ridge of ice
  5. Over time, that ridge grows and traps more melting water behind it, which can back up under your shingles and leak into your home

The root cause almost always comes down to heat escaping unevenly across your roof — not just cold weather itself.

Signs You Already Have an Ice Dam Problem

  • Visible ice ridges or icicles hanging along your roofline or gutters
  • Water stains on interior ceilings near exterior walls, especially after a thaw
  • Ice building up specifically in valleys or above porches and additions (common weak points)

How to Prevent Ice Dams

1. Improve Attic Insulation

The single most effective long-term fix is proper attic insulation. If your attic floor is under-insulated, heat from your living space rises straight up and warms the roof deck from below. Bringing insulation up to a proper R-value for your climate zone keeps that heat where it belongs — inside your home.

2. Seal Air Leaks Into the Attic

Insulation alone isn't enough if warm air is still leaking through gaps around light fixtures, bathroom fans, attic hatches, or plumbing stacks. Air sealing these leak points stops warm, moist air from reaching the underside of your roof deck in the first place.

3. Ensure Proper Attic Ventilation

A well-ventilated attic stays close to outdoor temperature, keeping the whole roof deck at a consistent, cold temperature so snow melts evenly (or not at all) rather than melting near the ridge and refreezing at the eaves.

4. Check for Ice-and-Water Shield at the Eaves

Most roofs installed in Ontario over the past couple of decades include a waterproof membrane along the first few feet of roof edge, specifically to protect against ice dam backup. If your roof is older, it's worth having it checked.

5. Keep Gutters and Downspouts Clear

Clogged gutters full of leaves and debris make it easier for ice to build up and for meltwater to have nowhere to go. A fall gutter cleaning before the snow hits is a simple, low-cost step that reduces ice dam severity.

What Not to Do

Avoid chipping or hacking at ice dams with an axe or hammer — this is a common DIY mistake that can seriously damage your shingles. If you have an active ice dam causing water intrusion, a calcium chloride sock (never rock salt) laid across the dam can create a channel for water to drain, but this is a temporary fix, not a solution to the underlying cause.

The Real Fix Is Prevention, Not Reaction

Ice dams are a symptom of a heat-and-ventilation issue, not just a weather problem. A combination of proper insulation, air sealing, and ventilation solves the problem at the source, rather than fighting it every winter.
